Plea...I am so impressed by this post, Little Kiwi. Please continue to go 'head with your bad self. I stumbled across the link to this post in your response to the recent Azalea Banks verbal abortion (ICK! Done with her!), and I so enjoyed this essay. I'm a straight black female working in higher education, and I cannot begin to tell you how many parallels the black communit(ies) and gay communit(ies) have in common in relation to this type of distancing and infighting out of self-hate. Of course, oppression related to race and sexual orientation are quite different in many ways, but the same sort of "house Negro is better than field Negro" thing happens all the time. For example, one of my students was told that she should be grateful that her boyfriend is light skinned because "her babies won't be too black." The whole "good hair" is still very much a thing, and its even worse in some ways than Chris Rock portrayed. Because I am very visible as an advocate for black students on campus (and really, I also advocate for ALL students on campus, so I'm well-known anyway), some black students actually don't look me in the eye when I pass or avoid me because they don't want to deal with someone political and proud of her race who doesn't claim to be "color-blind". Man, I tell you, if I could shoot the person who came up with the bullshit "color-blind" detritus, you couldn't hand me the gun fast enough. So much denial and racism, internal or external, hides within "color-blindness." It's almost like a racial Don't Ask, Don't Tell, if you think about it. Anyway, you have a brand new big fan in me. I wonder often and sometimes but more times than just some - if your incisive and spot-on commentary, isn't meant for greater things than battling our blinded brothers whether on Scruff or the comments on T-road.
I just know you can find a better place to frame the actual argument, to articulate the facts, perhaps at the heart of where these people have begun to self-destruct/delude? Or in some creative pursuit that sheds light for those who are still able (or may one day be able) to perceive it. You probably know you're destined to pursue this passion for truth. Maybe you already have a plan. Mostly, I dropped by here to say I love your guts. I felt that building up on something -acting "straight" if you will- would serve as a means of gaining some sense of confidence. In retrospect I gained something, but it definitely wasn't confidence... (More like douchebaggery)
After a short while I realized that if I really wanted be true to myself, gain some genuine self-confidence, and truly come out of the closet, the "straight act" had to go. Got rid of it and never looked back.Tahimekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02902613825857526650noreply@blogger.com
